About Naturopathy

Naturopathic medicine is a primary health care system that blends modern medical scientific knowledge with natural forms of healing and a whole-person approach to disease treatment and health promotion.

Naturopathic medicine places importance on:

  • uncovering and addressing the root cause of illness
  • treating the person as a whole being and not separate parts
  • using natural therapies to provide the body with the support it needs to heal
  • educating people about their body, health and healthy living

With naturopathic medicine’s broad understanding of health and the ways in which our health is affected by so many aspects of our life and environment, naturopaths are often able to offer patients a new perspective on health and provide safe and effective ways to restore health. (CAND)  Naturopathic doctors can also complement and enhance health care services provided by other health care professionals.

Naturopathic Medical Training
Naturopathic doctors are regulated health professionals who undergo training similar to medical doctors with the addition of the naturopathic disciplines.  Three years of pre-med postsecondary education are a prerequisite for the four year full-time programs at accredited colleges of naturopathic medicine. Graduates receive the designation Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) and must successfully complete the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations in order to qualify for licensure.
